Gorilla Trekking Rwanda

Mountain gorilla family resting in the bamboo forest of Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda

Walk into the misty forests of Volcanoes National Park and spend an hour face to face with a mountain gorilla family, an experience most travelers rank as the single most moving thing they’ve ever done.

Rwanda is, without much argument, the easiest place on earth to trek mountain gorillas. The trailheads sit barely two hours from Kigali International Airport, the hikes are shorter and less muddy than in neighboring countries, and the government has poured permit revenue back into conservation and community projects for decades. The result is healthy, well-habituated gorilla families, well-maintained trails, and a level of comfort, from park rangers to lodges, that’s hard to match anywhere else in Africa.

At All Rwanda Safaris, gorilla trekking is what we do best. We’re a locally run team based in Rwanda, and we handle everything: gorilla permits, park briefings, transport, lodges, and a guide who knows exactly which trail your gorilla family is likely to be on that morning. Whether you have one day or a full week, here’s everything you need to plan your Gorilla Trekking Rwanda experience.

Why Trek Gorillas in Rwanda

Closest Trailheads in Africa

Volcanoes National Park is a scenic two-hour drive from Kigali, so there’s no bumpy all-day transfer before your trek even starts.

Gentler Trails

Rwanda’s gorilla families tend to sit at lower, less steep elevations than in Uganda’s Bwindi, making treks more manageable for most fitness levels.

Conservation That Works

Permit fees fund anti-poaching patrols and community projects, and it shows: Rwanda’s mountain gorilla population has been growing for years.

Planning Your Trek: What to Know Before You Go

A little preparation goes a long way with gorilla trekking. These guides cover the practical questions almost every traveler asks us before booking:

Where You’ll Trek: Volcanoes National Park

Every Gorilla Trekking Rwanda tour begins in Volcanoes National Park, a chain of five dormant volcanoes in Rwanda’s northwest that also happens to be where primatologist Dian Fossey spent nearly two decades studying and protecting mountain gorillas. The park is now home to more than a dozen habituated gorilla families, and trekking permits are limited to keep each visit calm and low-impact for the animals.

“The mountain gorillas were just astonishing and thrilling at the same time… I don’t know if I were just overwhelmed or I really saw a real life King Kong, but the silverback was way bigger than I do. Those creatures were really amazing!!”

Nicodemus Onyisai, gorilla trekking guest
